Will Oprah be the next president of USA?
When we think of black role models, Oprah is always up there with the greats. Some say this is because she didn’t allow her race or her gender to hold her back, she overcame obstacle after obstacle to get to where she is today. Her early years were not colourful she had to deal with poverty, molestation and her son died in infancy. She lived in rural Mississippi with her teenage single mother and was later raised in an inner-city Milwaukee neighbourhood.
She is best known for her talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show. Which was the highest rated television program of its kind in history and was nationally syndicated from 1986 to 2011 in Chicago. Dubbed the “Queen of all Media” she is the richest African- American and has been ranked the greatest black philanthropist in American history. Several assessments rank her as the most influential woman in the world.
However, her latest achievement was at the Golden Globes where Oprah became the first black woman to have been given the Cecil B. DeMille Award. In her speech she told girls watching the ceremony that “a ‘new day’ is on the horizon where no one will be the victim of sexual harassment and assault.” After this speech, rumours started flying about her running for President in 2020.
Friends of the celebrity have said she is ”actively considering” running against Mr Trump, although she has denied any presidential ambitions. The President himself, meanwhile, said “I don’t think she’s going to run” and boasted he would beat her if she did.
With Oprah's track record, she should never be under-estimated. She truly is an inspiration to people all over the world. Running for President may not be her goal at the moment but regardless; for black children to see her achieve the unthinkable on a daily basis, gives them hope that they too will break through barriers and fulfill their potential. We need to shine a bright light on our black role models in the midst of the dark images that are shown to them on a daily basis.
If one day, Oprah does decide to run for President. Would you vote for her?
